The Solar Farm Produces Electricity

The Community Solar farm sends energy to the utility grid, and RGE puts a monetary value on that energy.

You Receive Solar Bill Credits

RGE then applies your share of the solar energy to your electric bill in the form of Solar Bill Credits, which directly reduce how much you pay RGE.

The Easiest Way to Go Solar

Since 2016, Delaware River Solar has been a leading provider of Community Solar in New York State. Our 45 Community Solar farms provide over 20,000 New Yorkers with access to clean, local energy. Individuals, businesses and municipalities enjoy guaranteed savings while promoting the production of renewable energy with absolutely no additional costs and no burdensome equipment requirements. Solar the easy way!

Frequently Asked Questions

Community Solar is perfect for those that cannot or choose not to install panels on their roof or property.

Homeowners, renters, and small businesses with an active RG&E electric account can participate, including, but not limited to:

  • Apartments
  • Houses
  • Small businesses
  • Commercial buildings
  • Non-profits
  • Places of worship
  • Farms

The only exclusions are those who already have rooftop solar or another Community Solar subscription tied to their electric account.

Customers save up to 5% on their electric costs per year. Our goal is to match the your allocation of Solar Bill Credits produced by the solar farm to your yearly electric usage. The less you pay the utility, the better we are doing our job.

Example: You sign a 5% agreement with DRS. In December, we allocate $100 worth of Solar Bill Credits to your electric utility account. The utility will distribute $95 to DRS and you will retain $5, or 5% of the value of Solar Bill Credits. You will save $5 in December under this example.

The Solar Bill Credits and monetary savings can be seen directly on your RGE utility bills.

Your electric bill will include new, additional line items showing the total Solar Bill Credit value, along with what the utility paid DRS directly. The difference between the total value and what DRS receives (always less) is your direct savings.

DRS is currently constructing 3 new Community Solar farms in the RGE service territory, located on Yellow Mills Road in Farmington, NY. These Community Solar farms are scheduled to begin operating and producing electricity in December 2022.

Once the Community Solar farms start operating, it will take 60-90 days for you start start seeing Solar Bill Credits on your RGE utility bills. Then they should appear on a monthly basis for as long as you are subscribed to the solar farm.

Yes, your current electric service will not be interrupted or changed in any way. You will still receive your electric service and monthly bill from the utility as you do now.

The only update to your electric service will be Solar Bill Credits appearing on your electric utility bills.

No, there is no equipment to install on your roof or property, and there is nothing for you to maintain.

These Community Solar farms are built in a remote location and are independently owned and operated.

After you enroll your utility account(s), there is no obligation on your end, and you just receive the benefits of participating in renewable energy.

A community solar subscription provides guaranteed savings directly on your electric bill. Each month the electric utility, RG&E, applies your share of the energy produced at the solar farm to your utility account in the form of Solar Bill Credits.

For example, if you subscribe at a 5% discount rate and you are allocated $100 worth of Solar Bill Credits from the solar farm, your RG&E bill will be reduced by the Net Credit Value of $5, or 5%. RG&E then pays DRS directly for the remaining $95, or 95% of the credit value.

There is no scenario where you will pay RG&E more by participating in community solar. The savings are guaranteed every single month that you are a customer.

There is no catch. Community solar is the simplest way to go solar while providing savings directly on your utility bill.

  • No equipment to install or maintain
  • Guaranteed savings each month
  • Cancel anytime for any reason

How Community Solar Works

The Program

Introduced to New York State in 2016, Community Solar provides all New Yorkers access to clean solar energy.

  • Open to any customer with an electric utility account, including apartments and renters.
  • Great for those who cannot or prefer not to install panels on their own property.

The Solar Farm

DRS builds a Community Solar farm that sends energy to the utility grid. People, businesses, and municipalities join our community solar farm as subscribers.

  • Local solar farms are built on 10-20 acres of open land.
  • An average 5 MW solar farm can serve 1,000 single-family homes.
  • No equipment on your roof or property.

The Subscription

Customers enroll their electric utility accounts for a % of the Solar Bill Credit value produced by the solar farm each month.

  • Guaranteed savings
  • No fees to join or cancel
  • Cancel anytime with 60 days notice

The Savings

The utility applies your share of the energy produced to your utility bill in the form of Solar Bill Credits, which reduce what you owe the utility.

  • Subscribers retain 5%-10% of the Solar Bill Credit value.
  • Guaranteed monetary savings each month.
  • CO2 emissions savings from local renewable energy.

Solar Bill Credits are Applied to Your Utility Bill

The sample bill is a NYSEG / RGE bill that shows the Solar Bill Credits in the ‘Miscellaneous Charges’ section on the bottom of the bill.

There are 2 new, relevant line items:

‘CDG Value Stack Credit’

  • Total value of solar energy applied to your bill.

‘CDG Subscription Fee’

  • This is what the utility pays DRS directly for its share of the Solar Bill Credits.

The difference between the ‘CDG Value Stack Credit’ and the ‘CDG Subscription Fee’ is your net savings.

From the Community

One of the things today's traveler is looking for is sustainable tourism - environmentally friendly lodging, protection of natural and cultural heritage, support of local community, etc. Our continued push (as a county/region) to implement more green initiatives will only help us grow tourism.

Roberta Byron-Lockwood

President & CEO, Sullivan Catskills Visitors Assoc and Delaware River Solar Customer

I was likely one of the first residential and business customers in our area and EVERYTHING they told me would, has actually happened. We're saving 10% every month on our electric. Knowing that we're also reducing our environmental footprint is an added bonus!

Ray Pucci

Delaware County Chamber of Commerce President & Delaware River Solar Customer

This is essentially a “no brainer”. I have been fortunate enough to be a part of this program for about a year and have saved on my electric bill every month…. In addition, I know that I am contributing to clean energy. I have recommended this program to everyone I know including the organizations that I belong to. You have nothing to lose and lots to gain.

What first attracted us to DRS was the opportunity to support solar energy development, but the fact that we’re also saving money on our electric bill every month is icing on the cake.

Delaware River Solar has an exemplary record of listening to the communities in which it builds community solar systems. Their expertise and capacity for building large scale systems which bring essential benefits is well documented. DRS is locally based. All residents of this region are very fortunate to have a renewable energy company of this character and scope.

Dick Riseling

Apple Pond Farm & Renewable Energy Center

Shared solar expands access to customers who cannot site solar on their own property. Residents and businesses participate in a larger community solar project according to their electric use. Well-sited, carefully planned community solar projects deliver lower costs to consumers and make clean, renewable energy accessible to everyone.

Heather Brown

Sullivan County Government Center, Office of Sustainability and Delaware River Solar Customer

Community solar is an important option New Yorkers cannot install rooftop solar arrays of their own. It is bound to be a key component of our sustainable energy future.

Bruce Ferguson

Vice President, Sullivan Alliance for Sustainable Development

As a citizen of the community and a landowner, I support this project as renewable energy is needed to sustain our way of life here in America. It saves the taxpayer's money, as this project will be paying taxes and the discounts available from the 1200 homes that this will supply, speaks for itself.

Tracy Puerschner

Landowner and Delaware River Solar Customer

I've seen my electric costs go down. Their customer response times on questions and concerns is far better than the big utilities. I'm glad to see them in our community and look forward to a long relationship.

Harold Tighe

Delaware River Solar Customer

Having been very interested, for decades, in solar energy potential for both commercial and private use we finally have found a way to participate in being part of Delaware River Solar's venture. It gives us an opportunity to support continued development of solar power solutions in a rural community so dependent on fossil fuel use.

Carol & Phil O – Margaretville, NY

Delaware River Solar Customer

I have been passionate about renewable energy and solar in particular for many years. Delaware River Solar has given me a chance to be part of a program that really makes a difference.

Gail L - Margaretville, NY

Delaware River Solar Customer

I have been a DRS customer for over a year. Though there was a bit of a wait to get on a project, I was not charged anything until the project went live. Since that time, my savings has consistently been 10% off the NYSEG rate. I feel great being part of a local, renewable energy project while saving money. And, their customer service is fantastic! Whenever I have questions, they are very responsive and great to work with. Thank you, DRS!
